Andrew Burr
Andrew Burr, the 2013 and 2017 SoCon Coach of the Year, is in his 25th season with Furman and 18th as the program's head coach.
Burr, the winningest coach in the history of Southern Conference women’s soccer, was handed the reigns of the Furman program in December of 2004 and has built on the program's tradition of excellence by posting a 221-96-26 overall record and 107-40-19 SoCon mark while guiding the Paladins to four SoCon Tournament crowns, four NCAA Tournament appearances and three league regular season titles.
This past season, Burr helped the Paladins to a 12-6-1 overall record and 6-3-0 league mark as Furman claimed a second place finish in the Southern Conference standings and advanced to the SoCon championship finals once again. Sophomore Nieva Gaither garnered SoCon Player of the Year honors to become the second straight Paladin to earn the award.
Burr led Furman to its eighth NCAA Tournament appearance in program history in 2020-21 after winning the school’s seventh SoCon Women’s Soccer Championship, compiling an 8-1-2 overall record and 6-0-2 league mark. The Paladins climbed to as high as No. 29 in the College Soccer News Top 30 and No. 9 in the NCAA RPI. Furman had six players earn All-SoCon honors led by Player of the Year Isabella Gutierrez and Freshman of the Year Nieva Gaither.
In 2019, Furman posted a 14-6-1 overall record and claimed its second SoCon regular season title in three years with a 7-1-1 league worksheet. The Paladins downed Wofford, 3-0, in the opening round of the SoCon Tournament at Stone Stadium to give Burr his 200th career win. Jasmine Greene earned SoCon Freshman of the Year accolades and was joined on the first team All-SoCon squad by Isabella Gutierrez.
In 2018, Burr guided the Paladins to their fourth SoCon Tournament championship match in the last seven seasons. Furman posted a 12-7-0 record that included wins over CAA members Richmond and College of Charleston and SoCon power Samford. Caitlyn Reilly (1st Team) and Virginia Poe (2nd Team) earned All-SoCon honors, while Erin Houlihan and Grace Baghdady where named to the SoCon All-Freshman squad.
In 2017, Burr earned SoCon Coach of the Year honors after guiding the Paladins to a 13-3-2 overall record, 8-0-1 league mark and a share of the SoCon regular season title. Six Paladins earned first team All-SoCon honors, including Molly Dwyer, Rachel Shah, Sanon Williams, Jordan Evens, Quinn Lombard and Kellsey Weaver. Furman set a single season school record by allowing just 11 goals in 18 matches.
The previous season, Burr led the Paladins to a 13-5-1 record and 6-3-0 SoCon mark, which earned the Paladins a third-place finish in the league standings. Furman posted its sixth straight season with 12 or more victories and improved to 76-21-9 overall and 34-8-6 in SoCon play over the past five seasons. Under Burr's leadership, five Paladins garnered All-SoCon honors and three were named to the SoCon All-Freshman squad. The Paladins posted an 8-2-1 record at home, knocked off league champion Samford during the regular season and advanced to the semifinals of the SoCon Women's Soccer Championship by ousting UNCG for the second straight season in dramatic fashion, 1-0.
In 2016, Burr guided Furman to its second SoCon Tournament title in the past three years and another trip to the NCAA Tournament following a second-place finish in the SoCon regular season standings. The Paladins, led by SoCon Female Athlete of the Year Stephanie DeVita, posted a 17-5-1 overall record and 7-1-1 league mark. DeVita, who finished as the league's all-time leading goal scorer and earned first team All-SoCon honors, netted all six goals over the course of three league tournament matches, including the match-winning score in a 1-0 SoCon finals victory over Mercer in double overtime at Stone Stadium, to lift Furman to its six SoCon Tournament crown.
The Paladins finished 13-4-2 overall record and 6-1-2 in the Southern Conference in 2014. Junior Stephanie DeVita garnered SoCon Player of the Year accolades for the second time in three seasons, while senior Catie Moore was awarded the league's first defensive player of the year honor.
In 2013, Burr led the Paladins to a 17-4-2 overall record and 8-1-1 Southern Conference worksheet en route to earning SoCon Coach of the Year honors as the Paladins claimed the league's regular season title, tournament championship and a berth in the NCAA Tournament. Furman notched its highest wins total (17) since 2000 while recording its 16th consecutive winning season.
Under Burr's leadership, the Paladins placed six players on All-SoCon teams, forward Carlie Couch garnered SoCon Freshman of the Year accolades and sophomore Stephanie DeVita earned an invitation to the United States National Team U-20 training camp.
Burr led Furman to a 12-8-2 overall record during the 2012 season as the Paladins claimed their third straight victory over Atlantic Coast Conference foe Clemson and senior Rachel Shelnutt captured Southern Conference Player of the Year honors.
In 2012, Furman fashioned a 16-3-3 overall record, 7-2-2 league mark and advanced to the SoCon finals for the 11th time in school history. The Paladins claimed their fourth victory over instate rival Clemson in five years and finished the campaign on an eight-match unbeaten run. Stephanie DeVita captured SoCon Player and Freshman of the Year honors after leading the league with 19 goals.
In 2010, he guided the Paladins to a 3-0 victory over Southeastern Conference foe Alabama and placed three players on All-Southern Conference teams, including Martha Hall and Shelnutt, who each netted 10 goals to pace the league.
Burr's 2008 team posted a 14-6-2 overall record and 7-4 mark in the SoCon behind the play of first team All-SoCon selections Rachel Fry and Kate Myatt. He also guided Furman to its first victory over Clemson, a 2-1 triumph at Stone Stadium in September, with the help of SoCon Freshman of the Year Martha Hall.
Burr's Paladins toppled UNC Greensboro 3-1 in the SoCon Tournament final to claim the league championship and the school's fifth NCAA Tournament berth during the 2007 season. The Paladins finished the season 16-6-1 overall and 7-2-1 in league play. Under Burr's direction, senior forward Anna Betton claimed SoCon Player-of-the-Year honors after leading the league in goals, assists and total points.
In his first season at the helm of the Paladin program in 2005, Burr guided Furman to a 14-6-2 overall record and 7-1-2 Southern Conference mark which included a win over tenth-ranked Ohio State. In 2006, Furman compiled a 6-3-1 SoCon record and reached the league tournament finals for the fifth straight year.
During his 17-year tenure as head coach, Burr has produced 76 All-Southern Conference, 47 All-SoCon Tournament, 20 SoCon All-Freshman Team, 12 United Soccer Coaches All-Southeast Region, six SoCon Players of the Year and Freshmen of the Year, one SoCon Defensive Player of the Year and three CoSIDA Academic All-District selections.
A 1991 Furman graduate and member of the Region III ODP staff, Burr spent seven years as an assistant coach with the Furman women's program. His role as an assistant followed seven years as director of sales and marketing for Umbro in Greenville, S.C. During his time with Umbro, Burr served as liaison between Furman and the sports apparel company, which was a sponsor of the men's and women's soccer programs.
Prior to entering the coaching profession, Burr ranked as one of the most heralded players in Furman soccer history. In 1997, he was inducted into the Furman University Athletic Hall of Fame for his invaluable contribution to Furman's soccer program. With 50 goals and 19 assists, Burr ranked as the Paladin's all-time leader in goals scored and points. He is a three-time All-Southern Conference selection and two-time member of the NSCAA All-South Region team. A forward, Burr helped Furman to three Southern Conference regular season titles and two Southern Conference Tournament titles.
A native of Atlanta, Ga., Burr also served as the starting place kicker on the Paladin football team. He ranks as the only Southern Conference athlete to lead the conference in scoring in consecutive years in two different sports; he led the conference in soccer in 1990 and in football as a kicker in 1991. A 1991 second team All-Southern Conference selection, Burr (87 points) ranks second on Furman's single season kick scoring ledger.
Burr enjoys playing tennis and spending time with his wife, Dr. Stacy Burr, a 1993 Furman graduate. The couple has two sons, Casey and Jeremy, and one daughter, Sophie.
