Les Smith

Les Smith joined the Lackawanna staff in August 2018 with nearly two decades of coaching experience including rebuilding two programs.

In Smith’s first season at Lackawanna, the Falcons’ keepers set program records in lowest goals against average and recorded the second-best season shutouts and goals against average in Region XIX play.

At Lackawanna, Smith handles the training of goalkeepers, assists with academic oversight, conditioning, weight training, player identification, opposition scouting and match day coaching.

Prior to his arrival in Scranton, Smith spent 10-years between Slippery Rock High School (Pa.) and Grove City High School (Pa.) where he was named head coach for the All-Star team while rebuilding both girls’ soccer programs.

In 2007 Smith made his interscholastic coaching debut with Slippery Rock where he made an immediate impact leading the Rockets to their best record in school history. In that first season the Smith’s squad kept 11 shutouts and allowed a stingy .571 goals against average on their way to the best record in school history (17-2-2). Smith finished his tenure by leading SRHS to four-straight Region Championships including the school’s first-ever in 2009.

After SRHS, Smith took over Grove City where he again made an immediate impact, setting the school’s record with a 13-4-1 overall mark. In his final season the Smith led Eagles broke the previous record with a stellar 16-4-0 overall record.

Smith also worked for over 15 years as a coach for both Grove City SA, Crew Classics SC as a head coach of various age groups and served Grove City SC as the club’s Camp Director.

As a player Smith enjoyed a stellar scholastic and intercollegiate playing career, winning two high school state championships in Hawaii and Virginia before playing four years at NCAA Division II Salem International University where he was a two-time captain.

After graduating from Salem International University in 1997 with a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice he earned a Master of Social Work from the University of Pittsburgh in 2006.

Smith holds his National Diploma from the United Soccer Coaches along with U.S. Soccer National D License and Regional Goalkeeper Diploma.
