Joe Bartlinski
One of the winningest coaches in NCAA history, Joe Bartlinski has set the standard for success not only at the University of West Florida, but in the Gulf South Conference, the South Region and the nation. Bartlinski holds a career record of 348-62-25 (.804) in 22 seasons at UWF, the sixth-best winning percentage of all-time at all NCAA levels and second-best among all Division II coaches. In the Gulf South Conference, Bartlinski holds a dominant record of 176-21-5 (.882).
Bartlinski was named the top women’s soccer coach of all-time when the Gulf South Conference released its all-time team in 2010. He is a two-time National Soccer Coaches Association of America National Coach of the Year (2008 and 2012). He is an eight-time NSCAA/USC South Region Coach of the Year (2003, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2016 and 2022) and an eight-time GSC Coach of the Year (2005, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2016, 2018, and 2022).
Bartlinski led UWF to its first national championship in school history in 2012. He coached UWF to four NCAA Championships appearances in six years (2008, 2009, 2012 and 2013) including three NCAA Finals appearances (2008, 2012 and 2013).
Under Bartlinski’s 18-year tutelage, UWF earned NCAA Tournament bids in all but two complete seasons. That does not include 2004, when UWF’s season was canceled due to Hurricane Ivan.
Since the 2005 season, the Argos have dominated the Gulf South Conference, going 137-15-2 in regular-season conference play with GSC championships in 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2016 and 2018.
At UWF, Bartlinski has coached four national players of the year (Shaneka Gordon in 2008, Shakira Duncan in 2009 and 2010, Chelsea Palmer in 2012 and Blair Cowan in 2022), 32 All-Americans, two GSC Commissioner’s Trophy winners (Lindsay Nemanich in 2006-07, Courtney Jones in 2009-10), 10 GSC players of the year (CiCi Marrero in 2005, Nemanich in 2006, Gordon in 2008, Duncan in 2010, Sarah Story in 2012, Chelsea Palmer in 2013, Marjorie Boilesen in 2016, Esthefanny Barreras in 2018, Blair Cowan in 2022 and Maciah Lipsey in 2022), five GSC Freshmen of the Year (Jill Rice in 2001, Mauricia Nicholson in 2002, Sara Helgadottir in 2013, Marjorie Boilesen in 2016 and Peyton Peffers in 2018) and 81 All-GSC first team players.
UWF has set 10 GSC records during Bartlinski’s tenure: lowest goals against average in 2008 (0.26), fewest goals allowed in 2008 (7), most shutouts in 2008 (20), most consecutive scoreless minutes in 2008 (930), most minutes played in 2008 (2,377), most consecutive shutouts in 2003, 2007 and 2008 (9), best winning percentage in 2009 (.978), longest unbeaten streak from 2012-2013 (34), most players of the week all-time (56) and most defenders of the week all-time (53), and conference's most successful freshman of all-time in Marjorie Boilesen, who earned a conference-record 5 freshman of the week honors. UWF’s 20 shutouts in 2008 is also an NCAA Record.
Before coming to UWF, Bartlinski developed a strong soccer tradition in 12 seasons at Brevard College, and his efforts at Brevard earned him a spot in the NJCAA Women's Soccer Hall of Fame in 2017. From 1996 to 1998, the Lady Tornados won 68 consecutive matches en route to National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) national championships in 1996 and 1997. Brevard also set six NJCAA records, including consecutive wins (68), single season goals scored (201 in 1998), and fewest goals allowed in a season (three in 1996). Bartlinski, a two-time NJCAA National Coach of the Year, guided Brevard to a postseason tournament record of 12-2-1 in five appearances.
Under his leadership, Brevard boasted two national players of the year and 25 NJCAA, NSCAA and NAIA All-Americans. In Brevard's first year of four-year competition in 1999, the Lady Tornados climbed as high as No. 11 in the country out of 222 NAIA teams.
Prior to his stint at Brevard, Bartlinski coached at Lake Mary High School in Orlando. He served as the head coach for the junior varsity program, which captured two county championships. Bartlinski was also an assistant coach for the varsity program, a two-time Florida 4A Final Four competitor.
Bartlinski competed as a player at both Brevard and Elon, leading both teams from the goalkeeper position. At Brevard, he received all-region and most valuable player honors while serving as team captain. He was also the team captain at Elon and was named to the All-Carolinas Conference team in 1983 and 1984 and the all-district team in 1983. At the high school level, Bartlinski was an All-Florida first team selection and the captain of a state championship team in 1979 at Bishop Moore High School in Orlando.
Bartlinski earned his associate's degree from Brevard and a bachelor's degree in history from the University of North Carolina Asheville. Bartlinski is married to the former Colleen Runion. The Bartlinskis have two daughters, Christina McKenzie and Jordan Marie.
