Derek Samaroo

Derek Samaroo joins the Villa Vikings men’s soccer program as Assistant Coach in August for the 2022 season. He joins us from Union County College (UCC) in Cranford, NJ where he was assistant coach since 2014. In his first year at UCC, Derek was an integral member of the coaching staff that won the NJCAA Region XIX championship with a 12-8 record and advanced to the National Championships at Herkimer, NY. He helped guide the team to a 11-8-3 record in 2017 and Region XIX Finalist. He has supported head coach Alex Louis in winning 4 berths to the Region XIX tournament. Over his tenure, the team has consistently been in the top 50 schools in the nation in scoring goals and in the lowest goals against average. In 2017, the squad had a NJCAA Second Team All American.


He has worked with the Jersey Knights Soccer Club since 2003. He was the assistant coach of their U20 Men’s team in 2007. This team competed in the highly competitive USL Super 20’s program and guided them to the 2015 championships versus 7 other teams at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, FL. Derek took over head coach leadership of the U23/U20 Men’s teams since 2016. He actively recruited DI, DII and DIII college players for competition in the EDP U20/23 League.


He has been licensed with the USSF since 2009. Derek is a member of United Soccer Coaches (USC) formerly National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and earned his State diploma in 2010 and College Coach Professional Development Certificate in 2011. He has several other professional development courses with that organization. He is also a member of the National Youth Sports Coaches Association (NYSCA).


Derek has a Bachelor of Applied Science in Chemical Engineering from the University of Toronto and is a licensed Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario, Canada. He worked for the Colgate Palmolive Company.
